5 s program - how to implement 5 s successfully

Lean manufacturing use its tools very effectively. 5 s program is one of the major technique used in lean manufacturing to achieve its objectives. We will look at the way of implementing 5 s system in a lean manufacturing context.

Before implementing 5 s system in your organization, you must understand your objectives of implementing. Without knowing what you want to achieve, it will have a very little impact on your entire system. When all are clear of what they need by this implementation, then you can start doing the pilot implementation.

To successfully implement a 5 s program in your organization, you must have a strong driving force. This driving force will come with a strong project leading committee. Team should be well educated on 5 s principles and the requirements of the organization. This committee should have people from the management and floor. Team will have to take some radical decision in the implementation. This needs lots of authority. Either team members must be given the authority or people from the top management should bring in to the team so that the team will have the authority.

Scheduling the implementation and developing a plan is essential in the next step. Meanwhile it is better to select the place where the pilot project is going to get implemented. Then necessary arrangements can be done to facilitate implementation.

In the pilot implementation it is necessary to learn the impacts of implementations and the improvements have to be done in the organization wide implementation. This is the best time to do experiments and learn the effects of those experiments. Finally you can settle for the best solution of 5S. In this process people in the organization must be educated and their feedback must be obtained. All the benefits by implementing the 5S program must be transmitted to the people so that they will be motivated. Ideas from the people who are in the process is very important in improving the 5 s system.

When you are fine with your pilot implementation, it is the time to see the bigger picture. Expand your leanings and established good practices throughout the organization. Of cause you will have to do a fine tuning for the particular processes. But major changes will be minimal if you have done your pilot implementation correct. Do this until your organization feel 5 s process as their way of life.

You will have to measure the success of the 5 s program in your organization and adjust it continuously. This will be greatly helped by the user inputs. Remember lean manufacturing never ends. 5S neither.
