lean manufacturing concepts explained

Lean manufacturing tools - Standardization techniques - 5S

Discipline is one of the cornerstones of lean manufacturing. Without discipline a system like lean manufacturing can not continue. Meanwhile another one major aspect of lean manufacturing is the standardization of work. Every process and system is standardized so that there will be a way of doing things.

One simple yet very powerful tool used in achieving this objective is 5S. It is so simple in nature; it is hard to believe 5 S system can cater the requirements above. But 5 s system will bring discipline and standardization to the lean manufacturing environment. 5s is all about introducing good waste elimination techniques to the system, then making the system free from that waste and at the end making the system going on and on.

Some people understand 5 s as a system aimed at good housekeeping and floor cleanliness. But this concept can be used in broader area where you have any kind of waste. For an example you can use this concept in human resource management if you are wasting skills of the people. You can use these concepts in your financial activities to attack the wastes in that area.

These simple concepts have much more broader meanings than you think. So think out of the box.
