Affinity Diagram
This tool is a clubbing tool. Affinity diagrams
are very effective in grouping the similar things into more focused
areas. This is used to good effect in clubbing ideas generated
from brainstorming sessions.
In brainstorming sessions all ideas are listed
without making any judgments. Every idea is treated as important
and therefore will be included in the pool of ideas. Then these
ideas will be grouped based on their similarities. Then this collection
of similar ideas will be given a suitable heading to identify
them easily.
When you do a brainstorming session if you use
sticky notes to write your ideas this can be done easily. First
all the slips with ideas will be pasted to a board. And people
will discuss the similarities and then they will group these ideas
according to the similarities they have. Then these groups will
e given a suitable topic. The below diagram clubs the possible
causes for quality defects in your manufacturing facility, found
out in a brainstorming session.
Every empty box in this diagram should have filled
with a cause for the quality defects. Although this is a simple
tool, affinity diagrams are very effective in managing the ideas
and other information so that they will be more meaningful in
decision making.
