Total quality management and benchmarking

Benchmarking is fairly simple concept. It is about setting targets and getting there. Total quality management and benchmarking are used to do this. Take a look at this example. If you are going somewhere, and if you do not know where to go, then there is no problem where you go. But in today’s competitive world it is not possible. You should know where you should go and plan to get there.

How do you benchmark. Against what you do your benchmarking. Good question to ask before starting the process. Obvious answer to this question is, benchmarking against your competitors or industry leaders. Yes you are correct to some extend. But there are several other approaches to do this. You can benchmark against your own processes. You can benchmark against people who are doing the similar functionalities.

In any case there are important things to be remembered. Always remember to set realistic goals. Do not set unrealistic goals. This will kill your organizations moral. Also do not benchmark against weak processes. This will not solve your problem. Instead your organization will loose in long run.

In total quality management benchmarking you will have to get a good idea about the current state of your organization. Through study must be carried out internally. Yes, you should have your data before you start collecting others data. Preferably this study must give you a list of points to check in the benchmarked organization or processes. Then you can collect and analyze the data in the benchmarked process or the organization. Then study how your organization can get there. Remember every process and organization has unique features. Also remember not to copy the systems, but adopt them. Final stage is the implementation phase.
